Nexus 5 leak

Digging through the thousands of lines of code in that KitKat log file, Android World has discovered more hardware and software details about the Nexus 5, and some of them are definitely interesting if proven true.

Nexus 5 specs

The publication has focused on two particular potential hardware features of the Nexus 5 in this new log file teardown including optical image stabilization for the camera and USB OTG for the handset.

References to image stabilization are present in the code for both the front-facing and the rear camera, but it's not clear whether the code refers to actual optical image stabilization or software features that would improve photos and videos for both cameras.

Android 4.4 KitKat

More interestingly, the Nexus 5 is said to have some USB OTG features, at least for some specific tasks such as moving pictures and videos from the Gallery to an external storage device. Support for USB audio accessories is also apparently present. If accurate, this would certainly be a change of heart from Google when it comes to USB OTG support for Nexus devices.

Android 4.4 KitKat features

Android World says that the Nexus 5 which ran this particular Android 4.4 version comes "unequivocally" from a Google employee, as the code seems to have revealed access to Google's internal Play Store called Bazaar.

Furthermore, the publication has discovered that various apps from this Android 4.4 build have different versions than what's available on current devices – see current version followed by Nexus 5 version in this list:

  • Google Sound Search: 1.1.8 – 1.1.11
  • Email: 4.1 – 6.0
  • Clock: 2.0.3 – 3.0.0
  • Currents: 2.1.1 – 2.1.2
  • Cloud Print: 0.6.1b – 0.8.3
  • Google Authenticator: 2.49 – 3.55
  • Play Books: 2.9.21 (depending on device) – 3.0.1
  • Gallery: 1.1.40012 – 1.1.40030
  • Hangouts: 1.2.018 – 1.3.012
  • QuickOffice: 6.1.180 – 6.2.255
  • Play Store: 4.3.11 – 4.4.2
  • Gmail: 4.6 – 4.6.1

As you can see, some jumps are more significant than others, including Email, Clock and Google Authenticator.

Additionally, it would look like most of these apps will be available to download as independent apps on the Google Play Store, which would mean that older handsets that won't make the jump to Android 4.4 – or which will be updated much later in the future – will be able to at least get some of the latest versions of Google's core apps.

Android 4.4 KitKat

This is speculation based on the fact that these Google apps have are referred to as com.google.android.APPNAME instead of com.android.APPNAME, which seems to be an indication that they'll be available as independent downloads from the Google Play Store. While this Android 4.4 KitKat feature is yet to be confirmed, it certainly resonates well with certain rumors that suggested Android 4.4 will be compatible with older devices, as Google tries to further fix Android fragmentation.

New Google apps have also been discovered, like separate Camera and Gallery apps, a new Dialer app but also a Google Home app, which could be a new launcher or a "hub" for Google services. Similarly, a Terminal app and a Tag app have been discovered, with the later being associated to NFC tags.

References to themes have also been found, although it's not clear what that means for the new OS version.

Finally, the hidden Android 4.3 App Ops permission management app is apparently active in Android 4.4.

Wrap up

As you can see, some of Android 4.4's features may have been outed well before their time by this leaked KitKat log file.

However, we'll remind you that nothing is official at this time, and speculation based on lines of code may not always be accurate, no matter how convincing this particular leak seems to be.

That said, we're certainly looking forward to see what Google has in store for the Nexus 5 and its Android 4.4 KitKat OS version, especially considering that most rumors suggest these two new products are going to be unveiled later this month.
